Wordle: Technology Tools to get Teachers Started

After reading the online article, Technology Tools to get Teachers Started, I noticed that there are many web tools I do use in my personal and professional life. One of the most important statements I read is to have a reason why you are using a particular tool in the classroom so the students understand the importance of the tool, not just to use it. Of the many tools listed, I have used the RSS, Blogs, Online Professional Development, and Social Networking sites. I use the RSS during my pregnancy by receiving emails for each week of development of my baby through “What to Expect when You’re Expecting.” I have taken Act 48 credits through PDE for professional development classes. One of my biggest pet peeves is the use of Facebook by students who don’t know how to use it correctly. Being in the elementary school, we’ve come across many issues with students creating accounts and posting inappropriate things online that have then filtered into the classroom causing disruptions. Hopefully, by being taught how to positively use the internet, students will develop a better understanding of it.
The wordle could be used in the classroom in many different ways. One way I could use it is by giving students topics from our reading book. They can then create a wordle to share important ideas and phrases from that particular topic. Another way to use the wordle is to journal. The students would love journaling this way. Once again, they would brainstorm ideas and phrases from the topic instead of writing with paper and pencil. There are many uses for the wordle in the classroom.
